Dental notation: FDI vs Universal

Rebrief supports two common ways of numbering teeth. Pick the one you and your team already use, and Rebrief charts in it consistently everywhere.

FDI vs. Universal

• FDI (ISO 3950) — a two-digit system. The first digit is the quadrant (1 through 4), and the second digit is the tooth's position within that quadrant (1 through 8). For example, tooth "16" means quadrant 1, position 6.
• Universal — a single number from 1 to 32, counting straight around the arch.

Both systems describe the same 32 teeth — they just label them differently.

Setting your notation

You choose which system you chart in from your account settings. Once set, tooth numbers throughout Rebrief — on the chart and in your notes — follow that notation.

Tip: Match this to whatever your practice already says out loud. Charting feels most natural when the numbers you see are the numbers you're used to hearing.

Consistent across the app

Your notation choice is personal to your account, so it stays the same for you across every appointment, no matter which patient or clinic record you're viewing.

If you ever switch your notation, Rebrief relabels your existing chart to match — the findings themselves don't change, only which numbers are used to refer to the teeth.

Note: Because notation is just a labeling choice, switching it never affects what's actually charted — only how tooth numbers are displayed and spoken back to you.
